What are the research projects appropriate for 4th Grader? This is the question that could find a way to ask the parents, in turn, if your child brings home the annual Science Fair handout. Of course you can not leave the volcano every year. But what should be instead? What other projects are there? Do not worry. You must be a scientist to find out.

Here is a 4 by several projects for science level:

Material (which is the necessaryExperiment)

Adults should help the child to manage part of the material.

Cup of muddy water
Wadding —
Scissors
Band
Plastic straws
clear-vase
Paper towels
Drill
an empty bottle of soda-liter (plastic)
– Gravel
-pebble
large grains of sand
fine-fine sand —
Camera

Procedure

1. Adults want to help with this step. Remove the drill and drill a hole in the lidbottle of soda. You want to fit too tight plastic drinking straw into the hole. You can use tape to get to keep the straw.

2. Take the bottle of soda and put on upside down in the vase. (Enter the first end of straw.) The straw should reach halfway between the top of the vase and the bottom of the container.

3. Take the scissors and cut out the bottle with the bottle of soda. Be sure to remove the four projections, which are commonly found on bottles of soda anymore. Gone With the bottom,You can now things in the bottle.

4. Fill the bottle of soda with a cotton ball.

5. Now is the time, our rock stuck in the bottle. First in coarse gravel. Then put in fine gravel. Then comes the grain of sand. Moreover, the fine-fine sand. And finally, all the way up, some layers of paper towels.

6. Take a picture of a glass of muddy water next to your man made filter. These images can be used in the results section.

7.Pour the muddy water in the bottle of soda. Watching the water dripping from straw and into the jar. What color is it?

8. Time how long it takes for water to come through. Take pictures with the results.

9. With rock, you've created a filter for muddy water! – And science projects for 4th graders!

Schleich Stegosaurus Review

I ordered this Stegosaurus and a Schleich 1:40 scale Allosaurus for my daughter. She’s currently in a dinosaur phase, although larger dino toys scare her.

The Stegosaurus is not a small toy (I had to show my daughter the toy prior to Christmas to make sure she wasn’t afraid of it), but it isn’t overly large either. These Stegosaurs are a good size – my daughter can pick them up and hold on to them, but they’re not small enough to be lost in the corner of a toy box or under the bed.

The toy is very nicely detailed, suitable for use in a diorama or school science project… while also being a great toy. The sags and folds that were modeled in the skin are reminiscent of modern-day rhinos or elephants. I also appreciate the red-hued “sails” on the stegosaur’s back (since paleontologists speculate that the animals had many blood vessels along those plates & used them for heat dissipation… not that the plates were necessarily red in “real life”, but they are a neat reminder of their real-life purpose). It is a nicely rendered & imaginative depiction of what a Stegosaurus might have looked like.

Overall, I actually like the 1:40 scale Allosaurus better than this 1:40 scale Stegosaurus. While the Allosaurus has more character to it, this one seems to carry more of a natural history lesson to it than the more “modern lizard”-like Allosaurus. Definitely recommended if your children are into dinos & you’re not just looking for a toy.

Web kinz is big. No, it’s huge. Kids across the country just must own webkinz plush toys or they will be the odd kid without one. If their parents understand why they need to have their own webkinz toys, then all is well at home. Otherwise, there would be scenes of much pleading, crying, screaming, throwing tantrums or just sitting at the dinner table with round, tear-filled eyes that no sound-minded mother can ignore.

What hold has Webkinz toys over our kids, you might ask. Well, many. The kids are smittened over them because these toys are adorable. They take a humanized form in cute animal characters in the virtual Webkinz World. Kids first get to name them. Having done that, the kids can adopt their new pets, learn to take care of them, play house and have lots of fun. The kids prepare special foods to feed their pets using special Webkinz recipes. In the virtual world there are rooms to construct, trivia challenges to peak the kids imagination plus lots of arcade games.

Nevertheless, the Webkinz toys have only one year to live on one license. To ensure uninterrupted playtime with Webkinz toys, another must be bought. Without one, the kids cannot gain access to the play site on the Webkinz World. Thus, another round of shopping and scrambling for the parents to find more Webkinz toys to satisfy the kids. This is another good reason to have more than one Webkinz toy at any one time.

However, these Webkinz toys can also expire before the one year period is up, that is through neglect. If a toy is not being taken care of in the virtual world, it will become sick and die. So what happens when the kids have to go on school trips or attend camps? Well, here is where the parents get coerced into taking care of the Webkinz toys. Usually after a few days, the parents themselves, especially the mothers would get hooked to caring for the Webkinz. That’s only natural because the maternal instincts has taken over! At the same time, no parents want to be held responsible for the death of any Webkinz toy.

Webkinz is both interactive and educational. The kids learn about caring for their pets, feeding them and keeping them healthy. The kids learn heaps from answering trivia, doing jobs and responding to weekly surveys. By playing these games they can win KinzCash. With the winnings the kids buy goodies for their pets.

Some parents encourage their kids to keep aside their weekly allowances to buy more Webkinz toys. This helps the kids to learn the value of money in the real world. Or they give their parents a long list of Webkinz toys they would prefer for their birthdays or Christmas gifts. These lists of Webkinz toys even get to grandparents, aunts and uncles if for nothing else but as an insurance of getting more Webkinz toys as gifts. And because each piece of these Webkinz toy are relatively inexpensive, elderly family members would generally be glad to buy Web kinz toys as presents.

Orlando is one of the most popular family destinations in the USA, and with its fantastic theme parks and family-orientated attractions, it is easy to see why.

Here is a quick guide to Orlando, including some of the best family attractions to visit during your Orlando holiday:

1. The Walt Disney World Resort

The Walt Disney World Resort has enough to keep you entertained for days, so it is a great place to visit as part of an Orlando holiday. There are four theme parks at the resort, all of which have rides, parades, shows and restaurants:

o The Magic Kingdom is packed with rides including thrilling high-speed rollercoasters like Space Mountain, a Haunted Mansion, a Jungle Cruise, Peter Pan Flight and the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. You can also have your photo taken with Winnie the Pooh and other Disney characters.

You can ride on the white-knuckle Rock n Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith, take a out of control journey through the space on Star Tours and then take the Backlot Tour, where you will encounter movie special effects and soundstages, and see some of the different departments that help bring the movies to life. Children will love The Muppets in 3D and the Indiana Jones Stunt Show.

There are also two water parks as well as the Downtown Disney Area, where you can wander around the shops and then stop for a delicious meal. No matter which park you are visiting, you will find plenty of parking spaces available if you are hiring a car.

2. Universal Studios Resort

For more movie themed fun, you can drive your Orlando hire car to the Universal Studios Resort, where you will find two theme parks, the Wet n Wild water park and the Universal City Walk shopping district.

The Universal Studios theme park is divided into six zones: Hollywood; Production Central; New York; San Francisco/Amity; World Expo; and KidZone. Each of these is filled with rides, restaurants and shows to entertain the whole family.

You can feel what it is like to experience a tornado on Twister Ride It Out, ride a flying bike in ET Adventure or scare yourself silly on Revenge of the Mummy The Ride. Kids will love the Animal Actors on Location(TM) show and Shrek 4D.

Universals Islands of Adventure, is divided into five areas: Toon Lagoon; Jurassic Park; The Lost Continent; Seuss Landing; and Marvel Island. There are some great rides to enjoy including the Dueling Dragons inverted rollercoasters, the Jurassic Park River Adventure and rides designed specifically for younger children.

Why is it that every time I go to the grocery store I get in line behind this rather large woman with four small kids and two buggies of groceries and a clenched fistful of coupons? And why is it that half of the things she’s buying require a price check? This happens to me all the time and I swear it’s always the same woman. I just thank God that the grocery store had the foresight to put all the tabloids there for me to read while I’m waiting. I guess I should thank that woman, too. If it wasn’t for her I’d have no idea what was happening in the world.

Take the other day, for example. There I was, standing in line like always, waiting for the bag boy to get a price on the woman’s six pack of SlimFast. I scanned the tabloid headlines before me, looking for something interesting to read. The one about Elvis showing up at a Detroit McDonald’s demanding to know why in hell they did away with the Arch Deluxe did not peak my interest in the least. The story about Pamela Anderson Lee’s left breast melting in the hot sun during the shooting of a Baywatch episode just made me yawn. And the story about Ellen DeGeneres dating RuPaul just made me nauseous. Why can’t these people just make up their minds?

Then, the headline across the front of the National Excretioner caught my eye: FEATHERS FLY AS COSTUMED CELEBS GO TO WAR! THE DIRTY DETAILS INSIDE!

As luck would have it, the rather large woman finished checking out and I had to move along before getting to read the story for free. Generally, I have a rule about wasting my hard-earned dollar on trash, but this was trash I had to have. I had to read the dirty details!

What was the Excretioner headline talking about? Why, the feud between Barney the Dinosaur (hereafter referred to as “plaintiff”) and The Famous San Diego Chicken (hereafter referred to as “defendant”) of course. These two high energy, high profile celebs are going at each other like constipated pitbulls on crack, slinging mud and styrofoam, calling names, making threats. This is the kind of story tabloid editors live for. This is a movie of the week in the making. This is a Court TV special with a gallery filled with Muppets!

According to the Excretioner, lawyers for Barney (a dinosaur so popular he needs only one name) have filed a copyright and trademark infringement suit against The Famous Chicken for “ridiculing and assaulting a Barney-like character during performances at sporting events across the country.”

“In his act, The Chicken punches, flips, stands on and otherwise assaults a putative Barney,” an attorney representing Barney reportedly said. “That’s just not nice.” The suit further claims that The Chicken’s antics have caused irreparable damage to Barney’s wholesome image, effectively making him the Marv Albert of the Jurassic set.

“Barney worries that his younger fans will be unable to distinguish between the fake Barney that The Chicken assaults during his act and the real thing,” the attorney went on to say. “This could be emotionally devastating to them.”

The real thing? Emotionally devastating? I just hope the little rugrats never find out Barney is really just some sweaty guy in a big, purple suit. It could mean years of therapy!

Ken Fitzgerald, legal counsel for The Famous Chicken, said his client’s act is just a parody and the Great Purple One doesn’t have a prehistoric leg to stand on. “This is clearly a case of costume envy. I’ve got two words for Barney: fossil fuel.”

When asked to comment, the eternally jovial Barney just giggled and waved an underdeveloped arm through the air. “This is just a little misunderstanding between friends. I love The Chicken. In fact, if he were here right now, I’d give him a great, big hug and say, I love you!”

In a related case, Don Knotts, the actor who played Deputy Sheriff Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show, is contemplating legal action of his own. “I am the original Barney,” Knotts has told reporters. “If one more kid asks me to sing that stupid ‘I Love You’ song I’m gonna scream!”

I’ll keep you posted as things develop in the case. In the meantime, if you happen to be at the grocery store and you see a rather large woman with four small kids and two buggies of groceries and a clenched fistful of coupons, you tell her Tim Knox says hi.

Okay, so you’ve decided you want to make more money than you’re getting from your allowance. That’s great and there are many ways for teens to make money that you can do even if you have little to no work experience. Here are a few popular ways and some marketing tips to really get the dollars coming in.

Babysitting is one of the most common ways for teens to make money. If you are thinking about babysitting I encourage you to get CPR certified. You can take a one day class for about $50-$60 depending on where you go. That way you can put fliers up in local neighborhoods advertising a CPR certified sitter. People will find peace of mind knowing their children are in the hands of someone that can handle a crisis. Babysitters typically make about $8 an hour so it’s a great starter job that will still allow for study time when the kids go to bed.

Another one of the popular ways for teens to make money is mowing lawns. Target the neighborhoods that typically have nice lawns. You want to go there because you know they care about their lawns and will most likely pay someone else money to keep them nice. Try and scout out the lawns that don’t look as great as their neighbors. You can offer discounts for referrals or you can offer a discount on their first cut if they promise to come back to you next time it needs to be cut. Make up fliers and stick them on, not in, the mailboxes. It is illegal to put things inside of a mailbox unless you’re the mailman so just slide the flier in-between the box and the flag. After you get some testimonials you can use them on your fliers and marketing. Nothing speaks louder in advertising than the words straight from your satisfied customers.

Remember that even though this may be a part time job for you, school being your full time job, you should treat it like a business. Don’t expect business to seek you out. You have to get your name out there or people won’t know where to find you. This may not be a career choice for you but if you treat it like a business it’s something you can put on your resume which is great if you have a thin resume and need more work experience to list.

Find inexpensive ways to market. Make fliers on your computer and put them up in grocery stores in your area of town. You can also get business cards made for free at vistaprint.com. If you are starting your babysitting business go to PTA meetings and hand out your business cards. If you’re starting your lawn mowing business, go to the local garden shop and ask if you can leave business cards with them. Tell them that if they send you business you will recommend their product. Marketing with other businesses should always be a win-win.

Nowadays getting a website is so easy and can cost little to no money. Set up a myspace.com page for your business. Include pictures of your work, testimonials, specials you may be running or anything else you think will help people get to know you before they meet you. People only do business with people they like so make sure you sell yourself.

Overall there are infinite ways for teens to make money if you are creative. Think about what it is you do well or what you enjoy doing. Do you like dogs? How about dog walking? You like cars? How about car detailing? Whatever it is, the important thing is to treat it like a business and market, market, market. Good luck!

Before we get into where to find Ammonites for sale let me briefly give you a rundown of what they actually is. Having intrigued man for many thousands of years, and has inspired multitudes of legends, stories and myths.

How did they get it’s name? The fossils resembles a ram’s horn, and in Egyption mythology, the God Ammon had the appearance of a man with horms like that of a ram. The fossil was considered to be Ammon’s stone and there fore was name Ammonite. There is little know about the way of life of these mollusks, there are a few conclusions we can make though, considering all living cephalopods are predators we can safely assume that these mollusks were also.

The size varies greatly with depending on the specimens being found ranging from less than a centimeter in diameter to over two meters. Pre Jurassic ammonites where much smaller usually less than 23 centimenters.

They are a great collectible and if you are looking to find them for sale the best place to look is on the internet. There is a great range that can be found and you have the opportunity to pick up some great bargains on some of the websites. Make sure when you do start looking for fossils for sale that you do a comparison of price to make sure that you are not getting ripped off. There are a lot of people who are wanting to sell ammonites or other fossils to new buyers who have no idea how much they are really worth.

The distribution of the continents was at that time similar to the situation that existed during the Permian. In view of the great mass of the supercontinent Pangea, which still existed, the climate on land was of continental, mostly arid nature. Ferns and horsetails, widely scattered during the Permian, were now concentrated mainly in the humid and coastal regions, while conifers began to spread. Different kinds of araucaria were among the plants that were able to adapt to drier conditions of the climate, since their long needles facilitated the condensation of the air humidity.

At the end of the Permian period, many animal species inhabiting the seas became extinct. One possible cause is that the sea salt was gradually binding with the enormous arid continent, exhausting the oceans. The animals that could not adapt to new conditions disappeared. Only some of the ammonites, nautiloids, and different kinds of fish and amphibians survived. On the other hand, clams, various kinds of crustaceans, and reptiles began to flourish.

First clams began to appear, while reptiles of the order pelycosauria, similar to mammals, vanished. Ophiacondon was one of these reptiles.

A variety of other reptiles, however, such as marine reptiles and therapsids, flourished. The real dinosaurs appeared in the late Triassic period. One of them was the plateosaurus, a large herbivore. A great number of fossils of this dinosaur were found between 1919 to 1932 in Trossingen, Germany. It is also probable that small, rodent-size mammals already existed. Fossils attesting to their existence were found in China, South Africa, and Europe.

The Jurassic, the following period of the Mesozoic, takes its name from the Swiss mountains of Jura, where many fossil sediments were found. Cephalopods, ammonites, and belemnites are some of the most common findings.

During the Jurassic period, ammonites were again abundant and varied. Warm climate and the formation of large, shallow seas bathing the coastal areas supported their development. Many new forms evolved in crinoids. Part of these animals separated from their stalks and moved as beautiful, colourful crinoids in the water. Another part anchored their stalks in floating wooden debris, because the seafloor of the shallow seas, where there was only a slight current, was too muddy and there was not enough oxygen to support life.

Reptiles and dinosaurs, however, inhabited Jurassic seas as well. They were also able to remain part of the time on the coast. Crocodiles hunted in the shallow waters, but they were able to swim kilometres into the sea, far away from the coast. In contrast to today’s crocodiles, their environment was mainly salt water.

During the Jurassic period, the gigantic continental mass fractured, forming smaller continents. The expansion of shallow seas brought rain to formerly arid regions. This led to diversification of reptiles on land. It concerns especially sauropods, including dinosaurs, pterodactyls, therapsids, snakes, crocodiles, and birds.

Another branch of reptiles, the mammal-like reptiles (therapods), flourished already during the Permian and the Triassic periods. During the Jurassic period, only their more developed descendants – mammals – survived. They were small carnivores, reaching approximately the size of today’s rat.

At the end of the Jurassic period, 145 million years ago, the northern and the southern continents started to separate. North America separated from Africa, but continued to be connected to northern Europe. India shifted towards the north. Shallow seas formed between Africa and the still contiguous masses of North America and Europe, as well as between North America and Asia, covering low-lying regions. Hydrophilous plants (Poleiskappen), which would bind quantities of water, were not yet in existence. Warm climate continued into the Cretaceous period. Due to heavy rains, ferns, conifers, and ginkgoe trees reached gigantic proportions. Palm-like ferns, cycads, appear for the first time. Some of them had flowers and fruits, and were somewhat similar to the angiosperms of today. These types, however, became extinct. Today’s angiosperms originated during a later, parallel evolution.

These swampy forests provided excellent environment for large herbivores, such as brachiosaurus and brontosaurus. In addition to the herbivores, numerous large and small carnivorous reptiles were spreading on all continents. The largest ones were dilophosaurus and allosaurus. The predecessors of pterodactyls were probably also carnivores. They walked on their hind extremities and so the membranes between the talons of their front extremities were not occupied and could be used for flying.

The first known prehistoric bird, archeopteryx, dates approximately to the same period. Its fossils were found in a limestone plate near Solnhofen (southern Germany). It may well represent the link between reptiles and birds.

The last period of the earth’s Mesozoic was named for the white, chalky limestone, characteristic of this period. The conception of “Cretaceous period” was coined in 1815 by the German geologist Karl von Raumer. Chalky cliffs dating to that period are still visible today on the English coast (Dover). The Cretaceous started 144 million years ago and ended 65 million years ago.

This was the time when dinosaurs reached their climax before disappearing. Their complete extinction is still a mystery. Probably it was not the result of a single event, such as a fall of a meteorite or volcanic eruption, but more likely the result of the shifting of the continents and environmental changes that followed.

The extinction of ammonites (cephalopods), jaw-boned birds, and pterodactyls should be also considered in this context. Snails and sea urchins fared much better under the changed conditions, in fact, they became more diverse. As far as fish are concerned, in addition to cartilaginoid sharks and manta rays, only the more developed bony fish survived.

During the Cretaceous period, the already divided Pangea fractured into additional parts. Northern and southern regions drifted further away from each other and the Atlantic ocean widened. A major part of the continents was covered by shallow seas. North America was one of the most affected continents. First, the flooding waters proceeded from the south. The water formed a large gulf, which covered parts of today’s Texas and Mexico. Water proceeded also from the north, so that only a narrow isthmus connected the two large parts that were not under water.

Later on, even this link disappeared and both seas became one. North America was divided into two parts. At that time, a great variety of marine reptiles inhabited the enormous ocean. This is documented by findings of numerous fossils. When the water finally receded, it left behind lakes and swamps that provided an appropriate environment for the last dinosaurs.

At the end of the Cretaceous period, or the beginning of the Tertiary era, the reptiles were represented only by crocodiles, snakes, therapsids, sphenodons, and turtles. In contrast, mammals were rapidly expanding. There were also more and more kinds of birds. Marsupials emerged in Asia.

Great changes took place on land when the waters receded. Folding occurred in both great mountain ranges of America, the Rocky Mountains and the Andes. We have to imagine that In Europe, which was divided into northern and southern parts, existed mountains such as the Alps of today .

Together with the tectonic changes and the changes in the distribution of the oceans, the climate also changed. While in the Jurassic period the climate was rather benign, a global cooling occurred in the Cretaceous period.

Now there were different climate zones. This resulted in the change of flora in the impacted regions. As the sea levels gradually dropped, the climate was getting drier. The previously abundant forests changed into savannahs supporting horsetails and ferns. Conifers and ginkgoes grew in the higher altitudes.

First plants, which had seeds enclosed in a carpel and to which belong the angiosperms of today, started to grow on the bare rocks. Smaller leafy trees made a gradual appearance, together with mixed coniferous forests. These greatly expanded in the following Tertiary era. Plant fossils, which were found in certain sedimentary layers, help scientists determine what type of climate prevailed in the various regions during the individual eras of the earth’s history.

Schleich Apatosaurus Review

I knew this dinosaur would be heavy and large due to the description on Amazon, but I was still surprised. It is heavy! And HUGE. We have many of the Schleich animals, as well as the Schleich Dinosaur Nature set, and the Apatosaurus is much much bigger than any of them. It comes with a little info booklet (in several languages) which shows you where fossils have been found, how big it was compared to an adult human, how much it weighed, etc. Based on this info, I think it is to scale in relation to the other Schleich animals, despite being in its own “replica saurus” series. But since it was such a big dinosaur, it looks too big compared to the others, and is a little hard to play with for younger kids. My kids are 5 and 2.5, and they can carry it around, but mostly prefer to use the other animals around and under it. They really like it though, despite how heavy it is. I think it makes it more realistic – it is much more heavy than the adult cheetah because in real life that would be true too, even though they were not alive at the same time. Finally, the picture on Amazon seems to show a dull gray dinosaur without much detailing. The Apatosaurus we received is a beautiful deep greenish blue color with vertical black stripes. This would look great simply displayed on a shelf. I don’t think I personally would pay full retail price for this since I am not an avid collector, but we got it on sale and have no regrets buying it.
